Morocco isn't usually part of the conversation when people talk about where AI talent comes from. That conversation tends to center the US, increasingly China, and within Europe, the usual capitals. Fair enough, historically. But there's real infrastructure quietly stacking up back home, and it's worth naming instead of leaving as a vague gesture at "emerging markets."
UM6P in Ben Guerir runs AI Movement, UNESCO's reference center for AI on the continent. ENSIAS, one of the country's main engineering schools, has students running their own AI club and projects. As of this year, there's even a national push, "AI Made in Morocco," building out a network of AI centers of excellence. This isn't a handful of people in a group chat. It's a stack that's been quietly building for years.
None of that means Morocco "has arrived" in some finished sense. It means the raw material, students, schools, infrastructure, is there, while the international conversation kept looking elsewhere.
From where I sit, Moroccan, trained partly in Germany, working in Munich, the interesting question isn't whether Morocco has AI talent. It obviously does. The interesting question is whether the pipeline connecting that talent to where the resources sit, compute, funding, the actual research frontier, is getting any shorter. My own path, Casablanca to TUM to BCG Platinion, is one data point. I don't think it should be as rare a path as it currently is.
